In times of digitization, the question regularly arises as to whether Apps (applications) as application programs for smartphones or tablets can also be protected by property rights such as patents, utility models, registered designs or trademarks. It is usually known that Apps as linguistic works can come under copyright law and are automatically protected with the programming. However, copyright law only protects the work in its specific form from copying, i.e for example the source code from pirate copying. However it offers no protection from the teaching behind it being implemented for example in another programming language. This article gives an overview of further possibilities for protection.
